A really productive week at Fosseway. On 5th September the team installed sheet piling up to the end of the fence/start of the wood. The next step was to attach the top rail and retaining tie rods in order to align the tops. This happened during the week, then another slab of concrete was laid.
The piling has been paid for mostly by donations to the name tag appeal. Your name could be on the Lichfield Canal far into the future! Read more on our 2020 Falkland Road Piling Appeal
It's not just about the piling; another concrete pad was laid last week and the blockwork marches along the Falkland Road section. The main reason is to provide the foundation to lay the bricks, but it also seals the piling on the other side and forms a hard base for us to drive the plant over.
It was with great sadness that we heard our friend and volunteer Tony Gardner passed away on Friday night, peacefully at home, at the age of 75. Tony was a key member of our volunteer team and a friend to everyone who met him, he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
"I well recall first meeting Tony, then unknown, when he appeared among us for the IWA-inspired first public walk which Peter conducted along the newly opened Summerhill section on 15th July 2015. Having recently lost his wife, Tony was keen to find something to do in his line of work with knowledge of this area and long-standing interest in canals.
Despite living in Telford, he became a regular volunteer, reserving his ability with plant until he was accepted by appreciation of his evident experience, leading to his role in managing our plant on site. I have missed his regular visits to me on his way home for coffee and a chat to deliver the latest paperwork and site news. He will certainly be missed from the Trust volunteers team. With fond memories" - Bob Williams
