BMIF RECEPTION

The Chairman and other members of Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust were guests of honour at a reception held by the British Marine Industries Federation at the Institute of Civil Engineers on Tuesday 23rd October 2001. This was to celebrate the decision by the Government to ensure that the route of the canal restoration should not be obstructed by the M6 Toll Road (BNRR). This is of major importance to all canal restorations and has been widely welcomed by British Waterways, The Waterways Trust, The Inland Waterways Association and everyone involved with inland waterways.

The Trust took the opportunity of honouring several people who have helped significantly with its campaigning. Chairman Brian Kingshott presented L&H ties (See Sales Page) to Vice-President David Suchet, who has headed an appeal which has raised 160,000 towards a target of 200,000; to Chris Coburn, whose hair-raising crossing of the Channel in his narrowboat "Progress" focused attention on the L&H; to Sir John Smith, whose Manifold Trust has made a significant contribution to the funding of the aqueduct near Muckley Corner; to Michael Fabricant, Lichfield M.P., who campaigns tirelessly on behalf of the Trust.

Roger Hanbury, Chief Executive of The Waterways Trust, and Dr. David Fletcher, Chief Executive of British Waterways, expressed in glowing terms their continuing support for the work of the L&H. David Suchet spoke with great affection about his role as Vice-President.

The Trust is now giving its undivided attention to ensuring that the aqueduct near Muckley Corner can be built at the same time as the M6 Toll. Although considerable funding is in place more is needed if the full construction is to be achieved. The David Suchet Appeal remains open and the Trust will welcome further donations to enable it to reach the minimum target of 200,000.
